The Art of Indigo Hand Block Dyeing

The Art of Indigo Hand Block Dyeing

Our indigo-dyed fabrics are created using a centuries-old tradition, straight from the heart of Bagru, India. The process begins with natural dye extracted from the indigo plant. Cotton fabric is carefully dipped into an indigo well, then lifted out and left to oxidize over several days, deepening into its rich, signature indigo blue. A delicate balance of artistry and alchemy, we unveil the process with Ram Babu and his wife Rekha.

Once the color fully settles, skilled artisans hand-block intricate patterns onto the cloth. Each wooden block is meticulously hand-carved, carrying generations of craftsmanship in every delicate detail. No two prints are ever exactly the same—each piece is a true work of art.

We’ve been working with the same artisan family for over 15 years, a bond woven as deeply as the fabrics themselves. Every family member plays a part in this time-honored process, preserving a legacy of beauty and tradition.

Indigo is a natural dye and may transfer onto other fabrics, especially in the first few washes. We recommend hand washing your indigo garments separately and taking extra care when wearing white or sitting on light-colored furniture and rugs. This is all part of the beauty of traditionally hand-dyed textiles—rich in color, crafted by hand, and made to be loved.

Indigo hand block dyeing is a centuries-old craft that transforms fabric into a canvas of deep, mesmerizing blues. Grounded in tradition, this process is a delicate balance of artistry and alchemy, passed down through generations of skilled artisans in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

To create delicate motifs, a resist paste made from clay, lime, and wheat gum is carefully hand-stamped onto the fabric using the wooden blocks. This is Dabu printing, a technique that ensures certain areas remain untouched by the dye, creating contrast and depth.

To achieve the perfect shade, the fabric is dipped multiple times. The more dips, the deeper the blue. Between each immersion, the fabric is aired, allowing nature’s chemistry to work its magic.

After dyeing, the fabrics are carefully laid out under the Indian sun, where they slowly oxidize and deepen into their true, rich indigo blue. A beautiful, time-honored process that makes each piece unique.

Once dried and pressed, the fabric is ready to become part of something timeless.

Handcrafted. Dyed by nature. Woven with tradition.
